You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When saving a file, (File -> Save) a window pops up to chose the
directory where you would like to save your file.

When typing the file name, it interprets this as searching in the
current working directory.

The focus should be on the file name not searching the current folder. I
can see how this can be useful for people who want to search a file to
automatically populate the name field, and change its suffix, but I
would give priority to the filename.

A choice can be made to make this a user preference.

In simplified actions:
Change from:
File > Save (click on name field) (enter filename) [ENTER]

Change To:
File > Save (enter filename) [ENTER]

** Affects: gtk+2.0 (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Wishlist
         Status: Triaged
