I have laptop and external monitor. Let's say I switch off laptop panel by 
selecting Resolution: Off in GNOME's Preferences -> Screen Resolution 
(gnome-display-properties).
If I try to select any resolution again, that doesn't work (no reaction).

>From the terminal, either of these commands work fine:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ xrandr --output LVDS --mode 1440x900
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ xrandr --output LVDS --auto
