Stephen Donnelly's right. Had the same problem, found this page, and
tasksel allowed me to install Gnome when I chose to install Ubuntu
Desktop.

I've been using apt-get install several times, right down to attempting
installing the gnome-keyring-manager package (which can't be installed).
Tried aptitude as well, but I was doing that blindly. The solution was
here all along - tasksel.

Suggestion for next update: get apt-get to recommend using tasksel if
possible...
