Binary package hint: gdm
I'm running Hardy, but this also happened on a previous Hardy upgrade
from Gutsy (which pushed me to make a fresh Hardy install)
After leaving an locked open session with the main user, if another user
logs in, it enters its session normally until its eventually prompted
back to the GDM login screen to unlock its session, while the first
user's session doesn't show as opened and is in fact closed.
This is what I get in auth.log within the timeframe of the crash:
