I looked in System->Help and Support. I typed 'DVD' in the search window. The first heading is "Movies, DVD's and Videos." I selected this one. (I tried the totem manual, but it was useless.) Under this heading, I selected "Playing DVD's." The second bit of advice they give helps you enable the totem player to read the DVD. It looks like the problem is solved.
