well, it's funny, there are no crashes while running the log command, I had some problems unchecking the the box (gconf-editor » apps » metacity » general » compositing manager) but after closing the terminal I could enable and disable with no problem. I tried running the log command twice. no crashes, then I tried enabling and disabling the compositing manger without the log command and I get the crashes, had to cut power and reboot.
