Just happened to me while I was editing menu.lst using gksudo
gedit....Found something odd in my syslog.

Notice the time in the centre---not sure why that happened--that was
exactly the time when my icons started to go generic....I had a root
terminal window open when it happened & cd'd to / & did a quick chmod
755 & all my icons came back...
