Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I find it kind of irritating that the list/icon view setting is per
folder in nautilus. If I want to browse a deep folder structure that I
have never visited before in list mode (or icon mode) I have to change
view mode for each new folder I double-click on, since the all open in
the default view mode. I should only have to set this once for the
current window, and it should be used for every new folder I open in the
same window.

What is the rationale for the current design? I am sure this has been
discussed before, and I am happy for any references to such earlier
discussions.
