Public bug reported:
In Intrepid Ibex, selecting "None" for visual effects in Gnome
Appearance Preferences has no permanent effect -- it reverts to "Custom"
(or nothing if you don't have certain compizconfig packages installed)
on next login. The problem only concerns saving the changes between
sessions -- during a session, visual effects can be switched properly.
