OK, I built my own kernel with the above kernel patch applied.

This works good.  My wireless key now functions again, and the CDEject
key (XF86Eject) when mapped to Fluxbox keys file works too without
locking up the desktop input.

xev reports all fn keys to work properly (apart from F3, and F8 that
don't report anything, I don't know why).

I would say as this affects so many people that purchased shipped Ubuntu
Dell portable systems, it should be upgraded to a more important
category.
