I don't know what is wrong with a red cross, like the close cross, but it must 
have another shape otherwise the color is the only difference (and that would 
be bad for colorblind people).

The red circle with the red line through it is a bad choice. As most people 
know this sign from the use on trafficsigns, where it usually means 
"prohibited" it tells us something we are not allowed to do there. Therefor I 
think it is a bad metafor for a delete action.

A trash can could be used, but I don't think that is the best way to do it, 
since it might confuce people with going to the wastebasket.

Another option, which isn't just a cross (which also doesn't tell much about 
the real action) is the use of icons already established. You probably know the 
icon with a simple human figure throwing something away in a wastebasket (as 
seen on many plastic drink bottles). I know the size of the icon is a bit 
limited, but I am convinced some real good artwork creator (of which the 
opensource community has a lot, I think) might get the job done.
