I've just installed Ubuntu 8.10 on an IBM ThinkPad A31p and I get the black screen and identical error
[*****.********] pm_op(): pci_pm_thaw + 0x0/0x50 returns -16 [*****.********] PM: Device 0000:00:00.0 failed to thaw: error -16 when hibernating. Returning from hibernation, however, is successful.
