Can I pick this up where "jdamian.b" left off?

I have *exactly* the same symptoms (and apt-cache output)

.xsession-errors reports nothing while browsing for background files (if that's
what you meant).
However, I do get one error (and only one, from nautilus) when using the
standard browser interface.

** (nautilus:8269): WARNING **: Unable to add monitor: Not supported

Any ideas where to go from here?

As far as reproducing the problem ... I have no idea what I did to
"start" it. I only discovered that I could not change backgrounds, no
matter what I do (copied files into /usr/share/backgrounds, change
permission&owner, etc.). I'm reduced to attempting to change the
background definition XML file to see if I can get it change that way
(not complete as of writing).

Symptoms are that:
(1) only 22 of 41 files in my /usr/share/backgrounds directory even show up in
the standard change dialog.
(2) I browse to any directory I like, and no files show up as "images".
(3) Only by selecting "All files" can I see anything in the background location
browser (then I do see everything!)
(4) Selecting any file does nothing, as far as I can tell. It doesn't add. It
doesn't become my background.

Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and all updates as of 11/17/2008 (2.6.24-21-generic)

P.S. Yet to try: (A) another user, (B) changing the XML file to a new
path (.jpg file)
