I can confirm that gdm-setup is not working, though not exactly in the same manner as described here. Basically, when I run gdmsetup from the gnome menu, the window comes up for half a second and then vanishes.
When I run sudo /usr/sbin/gdmsetup from an xterm, I get a segfault. I use my own password, not the root password.
