GorillaBiscuit's idea didn't help. I tried wychwood's workaround of
removing /etc/init.d/gdm so I could get to a text interface login. That
worked, so I ran startx. That displayed my usual wallpaper, but no panel
started and there were no icons displayed. Then the screen froze with
the wait cursor displayed just as in the original bug. Does this sound
like the problem occurring without gdm?
