Just an added comment to this report...  in an out of the box install if
you try and add a bithday using calender it will state that it is a read
only calender as the original reporter stated.  This does not affect the
default calender at all, just the Birthdays portion which is actually
listed under "contacts".

It appears that if you want to add a birthday to that calender you need
to list it in the contacts personal information.  I'm wondering if the
option to add to that calender needs to be disabled if that is not the
desired function or if the calender should be marked for write access
and allow people to schedule times and such.

I still haven't searched for a duplicate report on this issue.
