Thanks Daniel ! :-) I did that, and no problem anymore ! :o) I tried it with both totem-gst and totem-xine, and both start and play just fine even if rhytmbox is already playing a song.
What I don't understand, is that I did check in System->Preferences- Sound, and the "default soundcard" option at the bottom of the dialog, was properly set to 'nForce' (the on-board sound chip). So maybe the sound preference dialogue has a bug and fails to select the selected sound device ??
