I messed around with the source package, nautilus-2.25.2/libnautilus-
private/nautilus-link.c to be specific, and made a change that seems to
fix the problem.  In the function
nautilus_link_get_link_name_from_desktop, where type is checked in order
to assign an icon (at least that's what I think it does) I added a line
to first check to see if type == NULL. I suppose the problem may have
been trying to copy a string which did not exist. I have attached the
modified file.

I am not a programmer by any means, so there  is probably a better way
to fix the problem, but maybe this will help.

btw, if there is a better way to do this, please tell me. I'm kinda new
to this. :)
