These programs might be used remotely, or in a nested X session, or a VNC session, for example. I realise there are ways and means, but I suspect the stock VNC server from RealVNC won't support that extension (theory untested).
I have in the past (not currently) run servers hosting desktops, accessible via VNC. IE.. not the distro's stock X server.
