After trying for nearly two weeks, I have to face up to the fact that I'm not
able to reproduce the bug anymore.
I'm not sure if this is due to patches and / or product updates, but I have
been running my music program more or less constantly and I haven't had virtual
memory rising on me as I had before.

I would like to close with the fact that I found using valgrind
difficult in my situation (having to monitor gvfsd), as it is hooked up
to the system / X11 initialisation scripts and didn't respond well to
the wrapper script solution that was offered to me both by Sebastien and
by an article on this site.

I think you can get rid of this bug listing.

Thank you for all the help.

Regards,
Rob Wiers
