Note to Developers: This particular machine (a laptop running an AMD Athlon X2-64 (dual core) ), experiences this problem in both 32 and 64 bit modes, and this problem persisted after being updated from the raw state at initial install to the current updated state as of Jan 23, 2009. Additional note: This might be related to something system specific on this machine, as I have installed the 32 bit version of Ubuntu on several other machines here - and I do not recall seeing this problem on the others. Update: This issue is not confined to file manager windows - the title bar on Firefox exhibits this same action while I am typing this - and it can be made to "flip" states by simply mousing over the control button area on the top right. I attempted to grab a screen-shot using "Applications --> Accessories --> Take Screen Shot" but taking the screen shot causes the title bar to become "normal" again. System Description: HP (Compaq) Presario F500 laptop. Broadcom (413) wireless using the latest proprietary Broadcom driver. Wired networking (forget the architecture) Nvidia Graphics using the "recommended" Nvidia proprietary driver AMD AthlonX2 - 64 2 ghz 2 gig RAM 250 gig HD partitioned into: Partition 1: Primary partition, formatted as NTFS. Partition label: Vista 32 Partition starts 3 gigs from beginning of drive and continues for appx 1/4th of the drives capacity. Partition has Windows Vista Home Premium, SP-2, 32 bit installed on it. Partition 2: Primary partition, formatted as Linux Swap Partition consists of the first three gigs of the hard drive prior to partition 1. Partition is formatted as, and used for, Linux Swap Partition 3: Primary partition, formatted as NTFS. Partition label: WinXP-32 Partition starts immediately after partition 1, and continues for appx 1/4th of the drives capacity. Partition has Windows XP Professional, SP-3 (32 bit) installed on it. Partition 4: Extended Partition consuming the rest of the un-used space on the disk. (appx 1/2 of the drives capacity) Partition is a container for two "logical" partitions. Partition 5: Logical partition, formated as ext-3. Partition label: Ubuntu32. Partition starts at the beginning of the extended partition, and consumes 1/2 of the extended partition's size. (appx 1/4 of the drive's capacity) Partition has Ubuntu 8.10 32 bit (desktop), installed on it Partition 6: Logical partition, formatted as ext-3 Partition label: Ubuntu64 Partition starts immediately after partition 5 and consumes the rest of the extended partition's free space. (appx 1/4 of the drive's capacity) Partition has Ubuntu 8.10 64 bit (desktop), installed on it. Installation of Ubuntu is a "default" installation. except that I have turned up the graphics "eye candy" to the maximum. I have also installed a number of "additional" packages within both the 32 and 64 bit installs, (not always the same ones). However, I believe this issue was happening prior to installing additional packages. Steps to reproduce: Launch either 32 or 64 bit versions of Ubuntu 8.10. (presence or absence of updates is not material) Open a file-browser window. From within the "places" pane on the left side, select several of the "external" volumes one-by-one, and mount them Move back and forth by simply clicking on different mounted volumes in the left hand pane. Expected Results: 1. The item selected displays it's contents in the main window area. 2. Since the focus of the window has not changed, the appearance of the title bar does not change. 3. All controls within the title bar remain visible and clearly drawn. Actual Results: 1. The item selected displays in the main window as expected. 2. When switching from one drive to the next (in the side pane), the window appears to loose and gain focus. 3. After two or three of these odd "flips" in focus, the controls on the title bar - and even the outline of the title bar itself - become indistinct and poorly drawn, if not invisible. 4. The controls still work because if you place your mouse pointer over the place where a control should be, depending on the individual condition of the window at that moment in time, either the control and menu-bar re-appear in color, or even if it does not visibly appear, the correct control action takes place if it is selected.
