Thinking about it, this should actually have been fixed by this version:

gnome-vfs2 (2.14.1-0ubuntu3) dapper; urgency=low

  * debian/patches/96_from_cvs_only_non_automounted_listed.patch:
    - patch from CVS, list only drives which don't do automount,
      use storage.media_check_enabled hal property for that
      (Ubuntu: #33451, #41740)

I. e. gnome-vfs now does not show drives which have removable media, and
no medium in it at the moment. I cannot reproduce this any more either.
Can you please confirm that it's now fixed for you as well? Thank you!
