Two verified test cases:

a) ubuntu 8.10 with nvidia gfx, gnome, with 3d effects, - when switching
user then computer freezes, it looks a lot like bug##88152

b) ubuntu 8.10 with intel gfx, gnome - this is probably SEPARETE bug:
- when using the applet, selecting an user, then it blinks screen (as if
changing VT) and then says it fails. repeat 2-3 times and it usually works out
eventually

- when I tried the Switch User from the screen-locked dialog (default
screen lock) then it didn't worked at all saying that there was X error
