I can reproduce this in a Virtualbox VM. A snapshot from yesterday worked fine, but after doing today's updates I too get the error message: "the greeter seems to be broken ... try again".
I'm wondering if this is happening to all people who update, or just those using Virtualbox. Marking this as Confirmed, seeing as that's three reports now.
