After doing more digging, I noticed lots of firefox processes running that
looked similar to:
/usr/lib/firefox-3.0.6/firefox -no-remote -ProfileManager http://ubuntu.com/

where ubuntu.com was any one of 20 URLs I had tried to open earlier.
I seem to recall my initial firefox session being opened by apport due to some
crash. This possibly had something to do with it. I killed off all the
firefox processes and now things are working correctly.
