It's probably caused by a lot of factors :) I had a system crash with Ubuntu 8.10 and reinstalled Ubuntu 8.10. I did however managed to make a copy of the .evolution directory which I tried to restore. Somehow evolution kept on complaining that the database was corrupt so I removed all indexes and folders.db. Evolution reindex the mbox files and regenerated a folders.db. There are still a few problems left like crashing contacts. The evolution data was imported previously from an machine upgraded from Ubuntu 7.10.
