Public bug reported:

if i want to enable desktop effects, nautilus can't draw the desktop anymore.
windows of open applications behave the way they should, even right-clicking
the desktop works. though the desktop isn't responding to new files/folders -
no repaint.
left-clicking the desktop freezes the whole system.

on only ONE occasion gnome showed the error message:
"Nautilus can't be used now, due to an unexpected error from Bonobo when
attempting to locate the factory. Killing bonobo-activation-server and
restarting Nautilus may help fix the problem."

doing so, doesn't do any good, results in a completely garbeld/mixed up screen.
this happens in latest jaunty AND in intrepid, all updates applied.

also, if desktop effects are enable, logs show:
bonobo-activation-server : could not associate with desktop session
