I have a similar problem on Ubuntu 8.10. I open Gedit, enter "Hello world". The print preview should show the Text entered, but the field where the white paper with the text should appear remains gray.
If I try to print (File > Print... > Print to File > Print) a yellow bar appears above the editing area with the progress bar and the text "Rendering page [number] of 1...". The number is counting upwards and gets incredibly large.
