@bill, The version from mplayer is not a fork. They have taken over the development of libdvdread. And a quick grep for DVDREAD_VERSION in the current source reveals that this string is defined but not used anywhere. So I don't think it is significant.
As far as the functionality goes, the upstream changelog claims that there have been many bug fixes. So I don't see a reason not to use it.
