Confirmed on 8.10, confirmed on 9.04 Beta. _This is annoying._ It works in 8.04.
I suppose this bug is not only nautilus but GTK-related. To reproduce: Open gtk-demo (from package gtk2.0-examples) and open the Tree View -> Tree Store demo. Click into the list, type in 'a', click again and "February" collapses.
