Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

I'm using the 64-bit version of the Jaunty Jackalope beta.

This bug occurs when you have the pointer capture applet loaded, you
click on it to capture the pointer, you try to lock the screen (it won't
lock, although that's not the bug I'm reporting), and unlock the
pointer, and then the bug begins.

Here's what the bug does (it's pretty bad):
• The keyboard no longer functions at all
• The right-click of the mouse ceases to function
• Clicking on URL-bars does nothing (it won't put the caret there)
• If you have a shortcut to open a command-line, you can't give it focus even
if you manage to open it
• Menus will highlight, but they won't open up a list of items

Anyway, the normal mouse click still functions. Buttons still function.

Anyway, this bug makes it almost impossible to shut down your computer.
There is a way, however, at least on my laptop. Just tap the on/off
button (that still works) and some buttons to shut down, restart, and
such appear—then click one.

Anyway, the first time this bug showed itself forth I had no true idea
of what had caused it since I was doing so many things at once. It was
quite frightening, as I thought my hard drive might have been failing
me, or the network was having problems (at the time, I was copying a ton
of files from my desktop over the network through my laptop onto an
external hard drive plugged into my laptop, since it was faster than
using the USB 1.0 on my desktop). The second time it occurred I was
doing much less and I wasn't so perplexed by the bug's features as to
forget so much what I had actually been doing.

Anyway, I locked the screen by pressing ctrl+alt+L. I had the pointer-
capture-applet configured so that the right-click would release the
pointer instead of the left-click (since I could accidentally release it
on my laptop's pad too easily that way). I'll have to check if it makes
this trouble with the default settings. The bug is reproducible, quite
easily, and I'm very surprised I only came upon it twice in all the time
I've been using this pointer capture (since I use it a lot, and I lock
my screen a lot).

I believe this bug occurs because the pointer probably has to be present
when the screen is locked or some such.

I know there's another bug about the pointer capture and keyboard
shortcuts. I wonder if there are hidden bugs that occur along with other
keyboard shortcuts, as well. Hopefully none of them are quite so bad as
this.
