When I did an "ls -lRa " the result was over 500,000 files (which is not
possible), mostly garbage.  

I am going to overwrite the thumb drive with a fresh file system and
then attempt to duplicate the problem.  If the problem does not
re-appear then my conclusion would be the file system on the thumb drive
was corrupted, which caused Nautilus to choke.
