Thanks Sebastian,

AFAIK this is a problem with the update because I haven't done anything
specific regarding sound.

Why would I want the jaunty version when I'm using Intrepid?

On synaptic I only have intrepid repositories present and it shows
libavcodec51 as returned above both for the 'installed' and for the
'latest' version.

~ $ dpkg -l | grep ffmpeg
ii gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg 0.10.5-1
       FFmpeg plugin for GStreamer
ii libavcodec51 3:0.svn20080206-12ubuntu3.1
       ffmpeg codec library
ii libavformat52 3:0.svn20080206-12ubuntu3.1
       ffmpeg file format library
ii libavutil49 3:0.svn20080206-12ubuntu3.1
       ffmpeg utility library
ii libpostproc51 3:0.svn20080206-12ubuntu3.1
       ffmpeg video postprocessing library

- These are also the correct versions to have according to synaptic.

It looks like we're getting close but how do I resolve the issue?
