Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

On a system with a large number of documents, that cause more than 14000
thumbnails to be generated, previously problem free directories can no
longer be viewed and part of nautilus hangs when displaying file list
with thumbnails, but you can still hit stop so it is just the file
listing and thumbnail display function that hangs.

Change to a different user and there is no problem, but it is not a
perms issue.

You can fix the problem by rm ~/.thumbnails/normal/*
But I think it will return once the thumbnail collection becomes large again.
