I just tested with visualizations disabled and I'm still seeing this bug. Are you sure it's fixed?
Info: I'm on Ubuntu 9.04. I get successful surround from the command line with "mplayer -ao alsa -channels 6 testsurround.ogg". VLC can't figure out how to access the device "surround51", so reverts to stereo.
