I had the same problem with rhythmbox (with the french keyboard layout), but I fixed it in Sytème>Préférences>Clavier>Options de l'agencement then under "Utiliser la barre d'espacement pour insérer un espace insécable I used "La barre d'espacement renvoie un espace ordinaire à tous les niveaux". Now I can insert a space in the search field of rhythmbox, and I DO can play/pause when my cursor isn't in the search field. It didn't affect other applications, and works perfectly. I hope it helps, maybe this setting should be by default in the french ubuntu
