I used the aptitude update command, sudo aptitude safe-update and 621 files
were modified.
On reboot, the normal bios load was followed by the grub 1.5 one line text
announcement.
The graphic login and password prompts never appear.
The following message appears in a text dialog box with a blue screen:

109 and group
116. Please correct the ownership or gdm configuration and restart gdm.
Kernel version is 2.6.30-5
Other text messages follow on a black screen, then disappear.
