Thanks Brian, I tried what you said, somewhere it worked for a a while, after I did the front Mic switch you mentioned. But it has not been consistent, the settings change by themselves, and the mic gets muted automatically and the settings change and on second try shows "Problems with Audio playback".
I have been able to use this on the Skype setup in windows on the same PC without problems. So it does not seem to be the mic problem. Looking forward to switching over to ubuntu. The article was helpful. Will keep trying, hope to get it right. If you have any insights do let me know.
