For future reference in order to get core dumps for applications to save you probably need to modify your ulimit settings. Do a 'ulimit -a' and most likely core file size is set to 0. You can set it to take a core dump by specifying a maximum size for the dump, or setting it to unlimited with 'ulimit -c #' or 'ulimit -c unlimited'.
