Public bug reported: Binary package hint: shared-mime-info
In Nautilus, files with .shp suffix are not recognized - they have type "unknown (application/octet-stream)". The "file" command detects these files correctly as Shapefiles (though it doesn't display a useful mime type): $ file onb_grenzen.shp onb_grenzen.shp: ESRI Shapefile version 1000 length 11050154 type Polygon $ file -i onb_grenzen.shp onb_grenzen.shp: application/octet-stream It would be nice if Nautilus would display a useful file type description rather than "unknown". The example file can be downloaded at http://www.bundesnetzagentur.de/media/archive/11358.zip ("Geographische Grenzen aller ONB, Stand: 11.05.2009 (zip, 10247 kb)"). I assume Nautilus uses shared-mime-info for its file detection; sorry if the bug is reported against the wrong package.
