To show the Home, Trash, etc. icons on my gnome desktop I have to run
gconf-editor, navigate to apps>nautilus>desktop, and select the
appropriate show icon radio buttons.

There should be a more obvious way to do this that doesn't require
looking for the documentation. Eg. something in System>Preferences.
