Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager
In Karmic , the screensaver does not Kick in . the display is always on
and the LCD does not go to sleep!
$ cat /var/log/messages | grep gnome-power-manager
returns empty output.
- running the gpm verbose does not give any output.

- These three combined have started to give serious screen burn-ins in the

These problems did not exist in Jaunty , this is a regression.
My temporary workaround for this is
1: Locking the screen , this activates the screensaver but the screen does
not shut off[Bug #415589]
2: using $xset dpms force off
