I followed the instructions on obtaining a backtrace, but gdb didnt report any 
errors, but it did say it finished running the program as soon as the actual 
interface for nautilus opened.
I tried gvfs-ls and that works instantly, as does regular navigation through 
terminal.
It only takes a long time to open in nautilus the first time you open the drive 
after its mounted, so maybe it's trying to index the whole drive the first time 
its opened?
I mounted my 80gb Ipod as well which is VFAT 32, and it was much faster (took 2 
seconds rather than the extensive amount of time for my 1tb external hard drive)
However my 4gb Ipod Mini took substantially longer to open than the 80gb Ipod - 
so it doesnt appear to only be related to the size of the drive.
