I'm still dead in the water, but I did get a LiveUSB of Jaunty going so I was able to check out /var/log/dist-upgrade. It was empty.
I did the upgrade from the Update Manager. Now I am downloading the ISO and plan on making another LiveUSB with it and seeing how I get on. Can you think of any other files/info that might be useful to you before I blow it all away and start again?
