Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gdm
If pam policy requires the default user's password to be changed when gdm starts up, gdm hangs... never reaching a login box or the desktop This issue was observed in http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/ports/daily- live/20091014/karmic-desktop-armel+imx51.img, when installing via ubiquity --debug and when the password entered for the default user in ubiquity does not meet PAM's password security requirements, but I'm guessing the problem is not restricted to this particular set of circumstances. The problem can be provoked on an installed system by setting the "password last changed" time field in /etc/shadow for the default user to 0, configuring gdm to auto-login (if it wasn't so configured before) and restarting gdm. From experience on a previous daily-live image, I believe there may also be problems even if gdm is not configured to auto-login.
