I found this to be a huge regression in usability. My motherboard has
one of those 'odd' soundchips, and every time I reboot I find the PCM
muted and the volume zeroed. I get desktop sounds but nothing from any
media that I play. Once I upgraded to karmic, I had no way to correct
this problem. Had to install alsamixer to fix it. Removing the old
volume control from the sound icon was definitely fixing something that
wasn't broke.
