That is true. And at the moment it is not a bug but rather an
inconvenience, because when a user installs additional language support
(especially spell-checking) it is probable he or she will have files
also in these additional languages.

Perhaps, these auto-detection encoding options should be included into
gedit "Preferences" with the same dialogue window that is used for
adding encondings for file opening. Or eve better both gedit keys
"auto_detected" & "shown_in_menu" could be editable via "Preferences" in
this way. That would be helpful and would save time of users ...
