Additional information: Searching the Ubuntu Forums, I found a thread by jrrader [SOLVED] USB and blank CD - no automount in 9.10. In it, he solved his issue by installing gnome-mount and gnome-volume-manager which were not in his 9.10 install.
Gnome-mount and gnome-volume-manager are not in my 9.10 install.
