I've just installed 9.10. This option existed in 9.04... It's very inconvenient since I also use a notebook with external monitor. Now I'm using a workaround solution - "System">"Preference ">"Display"> uncheck "Mirror Display" > Turn off the notebook monitor and leave external monitor turned on. However, the lid still has to be kept unclosed.
