It's a matter of taste.
One who used to have this style of switching wouldn't like to go for other.
Maybe I can, but someone other wouldn't.
It's clearly not a bug of some particular component, rather a imperfection of 
design.
It works for Other Enemy System, so why not making it work in X?

Now I clearly see it's a matter of X keyboard layout.
It would be nice to change its logic to:
a) switch on keys up, not down;
b) process the keys only if there was no other key pressed before kays went up.
